As I travel the world and teach because I love traveling almost as much as I love playing video games with services from http://elitist-gaming.com/lol/Elo Boost, I appreciate the Pilates community worldwide — Home Instead Vancouver and what each instructor brings to the method.  Back in 2009, I was presenting a gait workshop at the Polestar conference in Salvador, Brazil and I had the pleasure of meeting Isabela Moody and Clara Trigo along with a host of amazing movers.  It was love at first sight and a truly inspirational experience to be around these instructors that move from their soul and teach from the heart.

 

We have been lucky to have Isabela come visit and teach at our studio in San Francisco at EHS Pilates.  She will be introducing her new invention, the “Centipede” as well as show us some new repertoire on the Fly Moon, developed by Clara Trigo and his status wearing louis vuitton new bags.

While I have been blessed to study with many of the elders that studied with Joseph personally, I appreciate those that continue to innovate and push the Pilates method beyond what Joseph created, Isabela is one of those people.  Still applying the Pilates principles to new equipment and tools give us endless possibilities to serve our clients better. Everyone falls in love with Isabela, her spirit of teaching.  What I appreciate is the innovation Isabela applies to the existing Pilates method which she calls “Pilates evolved repertoires” as well as new developments such as the Centipede and Fly Moon.  The Centipede, this one amazing prop, can be incorporated into any session to assist with releases, stretches, strengthening and traction.  The method that Isabela teaches stimulates creativity and expands the perception of how to use tools for your studio as well as for individuals in their daily life.  This isn’t just exercise, it’s life!

 

While we honor and appreciate the method Joseph Pilates developed, most of us believe that Joseph, being an inventor, would have continued to change and grow as the knowledge of kinesiology increased and changed.

 

This is just one of the reasons I am on faculty with Balanced Body, I appreciate their openness and ability to grow, change and evolve the Pilates method.  They welcome new developments such as the Centipede, CoreAlign, MOTR and Bodhi.  While not “classic” pieces developed by Joseph himself, all tools that work with the Pilates principles that help instructors diversify and serve their clients better.

 

With that openness comes inclusion and the world of Pilates family that work together to push the method in new directions, helping millions worldwide.  Movement heals and we all know the Pilates method changes lives and improves the quality of life for many.

No two feet are the same – not even two feet on the same body. Our feet are a continual work-in progress. When we are born, our feet are only partially developed with only 22 recognizable bones. By the time we reach school, this number more than doubles to 45 individual bones – that’s a lot of changing in one little foot! These bones will continue to change over the next 15 years, some fusing together and others growing longer, until the age of about 18 when the bones reach a final count of 26. Accommodating little feet as they grow will ensure that they develop properly, that the muscles and tendons that support them develop well, and that no chronic problems will carry into adulthood. The most common cause of foot problems in children are shoes that are too small. More than just discomfort, too-small shoes can give a child a lifetime of problems with their feet, legs, and back.

The Impact of a Too-Small Shoe
Shoes that are too short or too tight will distort the position of the toes and cause pain, ingrown toenails, hammer toes, calluses and bunions.
Continually wearing shoes that are too small can distort the growth of bones in the foot resulting in permanent shortening of the bones and chronic pain.
Cramped toes will also distort the walking pattern resulting in poor posture which can impact muscle development in the foot, leg, hip and back.
Children may have an increased potential for injury from awkward movements to avoid pain and discomfort.
Most experts will recommend that a child’s foot get fitted by a trained shoe fitter at least every three to four months. A toddler’s foot can grow as much as a half-size in just two months, school-aged children can gain a half-size every four months. Children should be provided with shoes specifically manufactured with the changing shape of a child’s foot in mind.

The Ideal Shoe
The perfect shoe for your child’s foot is the one that was specifically selected to fit that foot, you can find orthotic shoes for her online as well. They should be fitted for length as well as width and shape, and toes should have plenty of room to wiggle around. A properly fitted shoe will be comfortable from the start and not require a period of “breaking in”.
Pre-Walkers. Children do not need to wear shoes if they are not walking. Their feet only need to be kept warm, and any shoes should be completely flexible and shaped like the child’s foot.
Toddlers. Choose high-topped shoes with a tie closure to better fit round feet. Soles should be smooth to avoid tripping, and shoes should be light weight so they don’t slow busy feet down. This helps with balance, stability, and gives the child confidence in their new found skill.
Preschool and Beyond. During these years, breathability and fit are the top priority. Children’s feet sweat a lot, and their shoes should accommodate this. Shoes should be flexible and not restrict foot movement, and be appropriate for the weather and activity.

Functional Anatomy with Clay in Hawaii and coming soon to EHS in San Francisco

After wrapping up a wonderful Functional Anatomy with Clay course in Hawaii at Caleb Rhodes studio in Maui this weekend, Christopher Nelson is making his way back to San Francisco to prepare for the next Functional Anatomy with Clay course at EHS starting on January 15th in preparation for the BBU full comprehensive teacher training, while also passing out Massage Services Coupons to new attendees, beginning on the 22nd.

Functional anatomy screening can be utilized to assess muscle adaptations that occur with acute and chronic nerve injury. Changes in muscle balance, and ultimately postures at rest and during movement, develop in response to pain, which is why is useful to have a pharmacy directory near by for solving these issues at the moment. UPC Meeting at Absolute Center

Our most recent United Pilates Collective Meeting; SF Bay Area Chapter, was held at Absolute Center in Lafayette.  Thank you to all those that were able to make the meeting!  www.absolutecenter.com

We began with a demonstration by Katie Santos on the new CoreAlign, a great new machine that will soon take the pilates world and beyond by storm.  It was invented by Jonathan Hoffman; www.hoffmanconcept.com and will be produced and distributed by Balanced Body; www.pilates.com.  CoreAlign units will be available sometime in February.  Ken Endelmen from Balanced Body was in attendance to answer any questions about the CoreAlign. 

Then, Elizabeth Larkam was kind enough to delve deeper into the cueing on the CoreAlign as well as showing us exercises that are directly translated from Pilates on to the CoreAlign.

Then everyone had a chance to have playtime on the CoreAlign.
